Starting point
Argeta ran a promotion for its spreads at Wien Mitte The Mall, one of the busiest shopping and transit hubs in Vienna. In a setting like this, classic sampling faces a familiar hurdle: many people are on their way somewhere else, and a tasting stand alone is no reason to stop. The promotion therefore relied on a simple reason to join in, one that connects handing out products with a short, positive brand interaction.
The game and the setup
We used our digital Spin the Wheel game, provided via the platform and designed in the Argeta look. The wheel ran on a large screen at the promotion stand and was controlled from visitors' own smartphones. No app was needed, the game runs directly in the browser.
Participation was deliberately simple: scan a QR code, spin on your smartphone, and receive an Argeta product instantly if you win. With no technical effort for participants, it created a playful interaction with high engagement. Because the spin is triggered on the phone and the result is shown on the big screen, bystanders see what is happening and are drawn to the stand themselves.
The prizes were the spreads themselves, so sampling and prize handout became one step: whoever wins takes the product along right away. On the platform, segments, prizes and the probability per segment can be set and adjusted during operation, so a limited product stock can be distributed in a controlled way across the entire promotion.
The setup also stayed lean for the promotion team: one screen at the stand, a clearly visible QR code, and no tablets or dedicated input devices to supervise, charge or clean. People play on the device they already hold in their hand, so the team can focus on what sampling is really about: handing over the product and having a short conversation.
Numbers
Duration: three days at Wien Mitte The Mall
Participants: around 1,500 people
For a promotion stand in a through-traffic location, that is a high number of people who did not just walk past but actively played.
Outcome
The combination of sampling and gamification significantly increased dwell time at the stand. Handing out samples became a short, playful encounter with the brand, with around 1,500 people taking part over three days. Planning a similar promotion at the point of sale or in a shopping center?
